Chapter Adventures
Members are encouraged to share their love of flying.
At the Treasure Coast 99s meeting that was held on July 9 at North County Airport ( F45) our very own Anita Mixon and Nancy Bradshaw spoke about their experiences with the Air Race Classic.
As a new chapter, with 13 members we are very lucky to have 3 of the charter members to have flown the Air Race Classic! The Air Race Classic started in 1929 and has evolved over the years and now includes GPS trackers, and constant contact with the racers by social media. The current race routes are approximately 2,400 statute miles in length, and the contestants are given four days, flying VFR in daylight hours, to reach the terminus. Each airplane is assigned a handicap speed – and the goal is to have the actual ground speed be as far over the handicap speed as possible. The pilots are thus given the leeway to play the elements, holding out for better weather, winds, etc. The objective is to fly the "perfect" cross-country. In this type of race, the official standings cannot be released until the final entrant has crossed the finish line. Actually, the last arrival can be the winner. Oh what those 20 pilots in 1929 that raced from Santa Monica CA to Cleveland OH would think if they saw the race today! Anita gave a great power point display, and passed around her program and flight book from this years race. And then Anita and Nancy offered their insight into the race, shared how the race has fostered lifelong friendships for them, shared some race secrets, and spoke to some of the financial and emotional tolls of the race. Everyone left the meeting with more knowledge of the race, and the desire to take part in the race themselves one day. Click here to see Anita's Power point !
